Social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, get to know new acquaintances and support small businesses and creators. Most people have at least one social media account, and many consider it essential to modern life. Not everyone is easy to find on social media, however.
If you’re looking to connect with a business associate or a friend or family member you’ve lost touch with via social media, you may have a hard time finding their account. If you search for their name, you might get no results.
This could mean that their account is under a nickname, or perhaps they’ve changed their name since you last contacted them. Some names are also extremely common and can bring up hundreds of user profiles when you search. Social media apps require users to sign up with a valid email address, so if you have their email address, you can sometimes use this to find their social media account.
This guide breaks down which social media accounts allow you to search for users with an email address, along with some other methods to find social media accounts.
Reaching Out Via Email
The most direct way that their email address can help you find their social media accounts, is to use that address to reach out. Contact them through email and let them know that you’re interested in connecting on social media.
Sometimes, of course, your email can get lost in an overflowing inbox. If you haven’t exchanged emails before, your message could also end up banished to the spam folder. After a week or two, if you don’t hear back, you can try a few other methods of contacting the person on social media.
Online Search Tools
Some people have multiple email addresses for business and personal uses. If you have their business email, for example, they may not have that connected to any of their social media accounts.
Using an online people search tool can help you find other email addresses associated with someone, as well as some social media profiles. If you have the first and last name of the person you’re interested in, their phone number, or their address, you can search for their email addresses and social media profiles this way.
Searching for Email Addresses on Social Media
While every social media site requires an email to sign up, not all allow you to search via email for users. It’s also important to respect the privacy of others. Some people prefer to keep their social media private, only sharing content with a few people, or using it solely for professional networking. If you request to follow them and are rejected, respect their decision to keep things private.
Here are some of the most common social networking sites with details about how to search for users with email addresses, if they support it.
Facebook allows you to search for users by email address. There are a few things you need to do to help narrow down your results, however.
In the search bar, you can enter someone’s email address, which will search all of Facebook for anything that matches. On the sidebar, select “people” to narrow down your search to personal accounts.
You can also add other filters, such as someone’s city or workplace. The filters also allow you to search friends of friends if you have mutual acquaintances.
Matching profiles will appear, showing usernames and profile photos. From there, you can click on the profile to confirm this is the person you’re looking for, and you can add them as a friend. If they accept your friend request, you’ll be able to see and comment on their page.
Some profiles may not have the “add friend” button enabled. This means that you can’t request them to add you. Instead, you may be able to message them through the app and ask them to add you instead.
One of the most popular social media sites, Instagram, has an estimated 2.4 billion users. Unfortunately, there is no way to directly search for user accounts with just an email address at this time. If you put an email address in the search bar, it will bring up users with similar account names, which may or may not help you find your contact.
Instead, you can use Instagram’s “discover people” feature. In your profile settings under “discover people,” you have the option to connect your email account and let the app access your email contacts. This feature suggests friends to you based on your contacts. If you have the person’s email address saved, their account may be suggested to you.
Some third party apps have also been developed that allow users to search for Instagram accounts connected to particular email addresses. Remember to always keep in mind your own safety and privacy when using any of these methods.
The built-in search feature of Twitter allows users to search for accounts by email address or phone number, but many people adjust their safety settings to keep this data private. You can start by doing a basic search, but if your acquaintance has made this information unsearchable, you won’t get the results you’re looking for.
Similar to Instagram, Twitter allows you to change your own privacy settings to sync contacts with your account. In the Privacy and Safety tab, select “discoverability and contacts.” From there, you can allow the app to sync with your contacts. The app will then show you which of your contacts have accounts.
TikTok
One of the most popular apps in recent years, TikTok is controversial, but still beloved by many. While the app does allow users to have an email address publicly visible on their account page if they choose, there’s no way to search for an account by email address alone.
If you don’t know if someone has a TikTok, you can search by name or phone number in the app’s search feature.
TikTok has a feature to allows you to sync your Facebook friends with the app, so if you are connected to Facebook, you can choose to “find Facebook friends” on your profile. To finish syncing your Facebook friends list, you will have to sign in to Facebook. The app will then show you which of your Facebook friends also have TikTok accounts.
Be aware that there are a lot of privacy concerns with TikTok, and using this feature allows the app to access your Facebook profile and see any information posted there.
While LinkedIn is a site that aims to help you find jobs and grow professionally, it’s also become a major networking site. Many people use it like a more job-oriented Facebook, sharing posts and major life events while connecting with colleagues past and present.
LinkedIn does allow you to search email addresses in the search bar at the top of the page. However, you’ll need someone’s work email address, and they will need to make it visible in their privacy settings.
You can also use LinkedIn’s connections tab to import contacts directly from your personal or professional email account. Once the site finds profiles associated with the email address, you can send a connection request to their account.
While Pinterest is less like many other social media sites that focus on sharing photos and life updates, the site has remained popular for many years for sharing ideas. Once you follow a friend on Pinterest, you can see their public boards and even invite them to collaborate with you on a board.
While Pinterest’s search feature is usually used to search for pins, you can also search for other users. Typically, it’s better to search for someone’s name or username, but if you search via email address, associated accounts will come up. From there, you can click on their profile and follow them. You can also message them through Pinterest’s direct message feature.
Reconnect on Social Media Safely
While social media helps millions stay in touch each day, it’s also important to be aware of privacy. Many methods you can use to find friends on social networking sites with their email addresses require you to allow these apps to have access to your personal information as well.
Always remember to go back and adjust your privacy settings later, removing the app’s access to things like your email or phone contacts. This will protect your information from data breaches and excess spam.
