Cash App is one of the most popular peer-to-peer payment apps out there right now, and it thrives on the convenience it creates for people. Sending and receiving money with friends is as easy as a few taps on your screen.
However, what if you need to connect with someone new and only have their phone number? Can you find their Cash App username or profile just by dialing in those digits?
Unfortunately, you can’t. Cash App’s user privacy policies don’t allow you to search using someone’s phone number. However, all hope isn’t lost. In this article, we’re going to walk you through the best workarounds and alternative methods you can use to find someone on Cash App, using only their phone number.
This will largely involve existing connections, social media sleuthing, and the power of a well-placed question.
So, How Do You Find a Cash App User With Their Phone Number?
While there’s no official method to do this on Cash App itself, there are some workarounds that can help if you have the phone number of the user in question. Keep in mind that since these methods are workarounds, they aren’t always guaranteed to work.
Contact Them for Their Username
If your primary objective in obtaining a Cashtag username is to send the individual money, the most straightforward way is to just contact the person directly through your phone (since you have their number).
You could explain you’d like to send them money on Cash App and politely ask for their username. When doing so, we recommend against requesting money without a prior agreement, as it is usually seen in bad faith. Make sure you have a legitimate reason to ask for the username.
With the username in hand, things get a lot simpler. Open Cash App and go to the search bar, and type in the complete Cashtag username (e.g., $CoolCat2023). If the username you were given is correct and the person has allowed visibility in search results, their Cash App profile should appear. You’ll be able to see their $Cashtag and maybe a short bio, but you won’t have access to their full name or phone number due to privacy.
This method is the easiest and most effective, but of course, it depends entirely on the person being comfortable with sharing their Cashtag with you. If they’re hesitant, respect their privacy and consider the possibility that they aren’t interested in connecting on Cash App.
Check Shared Transaction History
Cash App stores your history of sent and received payments. Though you can’t search for someone you haven’t interacted with financially, if you know that you’ve previously sent or received money from the person whose number you’re searching, you’ll see their name in the transaction history.
This will require you to remember the vague details about the transaction you made, namely the amount and the date, which will make it easier to find the contact.
It’s also possible that even if you have a name from a past transaction, you may not be entirely certain that it’s the right person. In this case, look for the context in which the transaction happened–if the description mentions “rent payment” or “concert tickets,” it might jog your memory about who the person is.
Admittedly, this method has its shortcomings. First, you need to have had prior financial interaction with the contact. Secondly, the displayed name might not be entirely accurate, or you may not be sure if it’s the right person. You also won’t be able to find someone entirely new this way. It can only help connect you with someone you’ve already transacted with on Cash App.
Check For Money Request Links on Their Socials
If you only have their phone number, you can try searching for their socials since most people link their digits with their profiles. This’ll still be tricky, though, because social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter aren’t really designed for you to search with the phone number, either.
Depending on the one you pick, you might be able to search directly by phone number, but for others, you’ll need to use a roundabout way of doing it. With apps like Facebook Messenger or Whatsapp, if you save a contact, you’ll likely be shown their alias or public nickname when you search for them in the app. You can use this same trick to find them on places like Instagram.
Once you have the profile, keep an eye out for any mentions of Cash App. This will likely be a post where they have directly shared their username (preceded by a dollar sign $) or a link to their Cash App profile.
Some people also use money request features that are built into the social platform they’re using, which can show a connected Cash App username if privacy settings allow. Keep in mind that a lot of people have private profiles–you might need to have a mutual connection before you can see their posts.
We would also like to emphasize that whenever there’s a matter involving money, there’s a possibility of you getting scammed. Even if you do get a Cash App username using this method, make sure you’re not being lied to and fully confirm the person’s identity before sending any money.
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to reach out to them directly through a trusted channel (like their phone number itself) and double-check their Cash App details before sending any money.
How a Reverse Phone Lookup Tool Can Help
Cash App itself doesn’t allow searches by phone number, but US People Search’s free phone search tool does. These aren’t like going through a phone directory search where you look up a name to find a number–a reverse phone lookup works the other way around.
You simply enter the phone number you have into a search engine or a dedicated reverse phone lookup service, and off it goes. It’ll scour huge databases of public records and online information to try and match the number to a name, address, or another social profile.
Reverse lookup tools go through a lot of public records that would be borderline impossible to go through on your own. Examples can include phone number registrations, white pages listings, and property liens. If the phone number is registered to a business or person with a public listing, the service will match it to a name and location and show it to you.
A lot of these tools also compile data from different places like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and any online directories they have access to. They simply cross-reference the number with profiles and online mentions and build a complete picture of the owner. This makes the tool great for other purposes, too, such as finding out the identity of an unknown caller.
User contributions are a big part of reverse lookup tools, so if someone has identified a number in the past through a complaint or review, it can get flagged in the database and give you a promising lead to start with.
When performing a reverse phone lookup, keep in mind that the tool isn’t foolproof. The accuracy of the information you get can vary widely, and you might not get a conclusive result from them.
Things to Keep in Mind
Cash App doesn’t compromise user privacy at any cost, so finding someone on the platform using only their phone number can be quite difficult. Their search functions simply don’t have phone numbers. We’ve gone through some of the workarounds that can help solve this problem, but we want you to keep the following in mind while using these:
Privacy
Cash App puts user privacy and security above all else, and searching for someone without their knowledge might be considered intrusive by the platform. Before performing any searches, consider if there’s a more direct way to contact the person, like calling or texting their phone number.
Workarounds Come With Caveats
The methods we looked at–reverse phone lookup, checking transaction history, social media checks, and direct contact–all have their limits. If you’re unable to account for these limits, the methods may not work at all or will give you results that only generate a vague lead, not the username you’re looking for.
Be Honest and Communicate
If you need to contact someone, we recommend leading with clear and honest communication. With their phone number, simply contact them and explain your reason for needing their Cash App username and avoid pressuring them to share it if they’re not interested.
Finding Connections
Finding someone on Cash App using only their phone number can be hard. As we have seen in this article, Cash App doesn’t really allow you to search for anyone using their phone number. There are some workarounds you can go through, like reverse phone lookups, transaction history checks, and social media scans, but they’re not always guaranteed to work.
If you’re still unable to get the person’s username after trying these methods, consider contacting them on the indicated phone number and getting the Cashtag directly from them.
