WhatsApp allows you to message anyone as long as you have their phone number saved. However, if you’re trying to find someone new, reconnect with an old contact, or determine who a number belongs to, the process is less straightforward.
Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp doesn’t provide a public search directory. Your ability to find someone depends on what information you already have. In many cases, you’ll need a phone number to get started. But even without one, there are a few workarounds.
This guide walks you through all the ways to search for people on WhatsApp, from in-app features to third-party lookup tools like USPeopleSearch. If you’re trying to track someone down, confirm a contact, or manage your online presence, this is the place to start.
How WhatsApp Manages Contacts
WhatsApp connects users based on the phone numbers saved in their mobile devices. When you grant the app access to your contacts, it automatically scans your address book and displays any numbers linked to active WhatsApp accounts. That’s why someone appears in your WhatsApp list as soon as you save their number and open the app.
There’s a catch, though. WhatsApp doesn’t display usernames unless the contact is already saved on your phone. Instead, it uses either the name you saved or the user’s profile name if no saved name exists. This means you can’t search for someone by name unless they’re already a contact.
If you’re unsure whether someone uses WhatsApp, the first step is to add their number to your phone and refresh your contact list. From there, you can open WhatsApp and tap the new chat icon to see if they appear.
How to Search People Inside WhatsApp
WhatsApp includes a few built-in search tools, but they are limited to your contact list and chat history.
Search from the Chats Tab
At the top of the Chats tab, there’s a search bar where you can enter a contact’s name, phone number, or any keywords from past messages. This helps you locate someone you’ve previously messaged, even if the chat is buried in your inbox.
- Search by name: This feature only works if the number is saved in your contacts.
- Search by number: Helpful if you’ve chatted with a number but didn’t save it.
- Search by message content: Type a keyword, and WhatsApp will surface all relevant conversations.
Search Inside Individual Chats
You can also search within a specific conversation. Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu (or contact name), and select “Search.” This allows you to scroll directly to specific messages, dates, or media inside that thread.
If the person you’re looking for isn’t saved in your contacts or hasn’t messaged you before, these search tools won’t return any results.
How to Add Someone on WhatsApp
To message someone on WhatsApp, you need their phone number. Once you have it, adding the contact is simple. However, if you only have a name or limited details, there are other ways to locate the number first.
Add by Phone Number
- Save the person’s number in your phone contacts.
- Open WhatsApp and tap the new chat icon.
- Their name (or number) will appear if they have a WhatsApp account.
- Tap to start a conversation.
If nothing shows up, they may not be using WhatsApp, or the number may be incorrect.
Add by Name (Once You Have the Number)
After saving the number, you can search using the name you assigned in your address book. WhatsApp will display this name in the chat list and search results.
Don’t Have Their Number?
If you only know the person’s name or partial details, tools like USPeopleSearch’s people search may help you locate a phone number. This can be especially useful if you’re trying to reconnect with someone from the past, such as an old classmate or coworker. You might also find their number through public directories or platforms they’ve used for work or social activity.
In cases where you’ve received a message from an unknown number, a reverse phone lookup can help identify who it belongs to before you respond.
Viewing WhatsApp Profiles
Once you’ve added someone or received a message from them, you can view parts of their profile. What you see depends on their privacy settings and whether they’ve saved your number as well.
What You Can See
- Profile name: If you haven’t saved the contact, WhatsApp shows the name they chose during setup.
- Profile photo: Visible unless restricted in their privacy settings.
- About section: A short status message they’ve added.
- Last seen or online status: Only visible if they’ve allowed it and your number is saved on their end.
You can view these details by opening the chat, tapping the contact’s name, and scrolling through their profile info.
Viewing a Profile Without Saving the Number
If you receive a message from an unknown number or open a wa.me link, WhatsApp lets you preview the person’s profile without adding them as a contact. This is often enough to identify whether the number belongs to someone you know.
Shared Contacts and Group Info
If you’re part of a WhatsApp group, you may be able to find someone by browsing the group’s participant list. This is especially helpful when trying to reconnect with someone you only know through mutual contacts.
Finding People Through Groups
- Open the group chat.
- Tap the group name at the top.
- Scroll through the list of participants.
From here, you can tap on any contact to view their profile. If the number isn’t saved in your phone, you’ll still see their profile name and photo (depending on their settings).
Shared Contacts in One-on-One Chats
You can also check shared groups and contacts by opening a private chat, tapping the user’s name, and scrolling to “Groups in Common.” This can help you recall how you first met someone.
For example, if you found an old contact but aren’t sure who they are, seeing shared groups might help jog your memory. If they’re not saved in your contacts, a quick phone number lookup can also help confirm their identity.
Finding WhatsApp Users Without Saving Them
It’s possible to message someone on WhatsApp without adding them to your contacts, which can be helpful if you only want one-time communication or need to confirm the identity of a number.
Using wa.me Links
WhatsApp allows users to create direct chat links using the format https://wa.me/[phonenumber]. When you tap or paste this link into a browser, it opens a chat window with that number in WhatsApp.
- Example: https://wa.me/15551234567
- You’ll see their profile name, photo, and any available public info.
- No need to save their contact.
This feature is useful if you have found a number from external sources and want to check whether it’s linked to a WhatsApp account.
QR Codes
Some users share their WhatsApp contact via a QR code. You can scan this using WhatsApp’s built-in scanner under “Settings” > “QR Code.”
Both methods allow you to reach out without permanently adding the number to your phonebook.
Troubleshooting Search Issues
If you’re having trouble finding someone on WhatsApp, there are a few common reasons it might not be working.
The Number Is Incorrect or Inactive
If you’ve saved a number but don’t see the contact in WhatsApp, it’s possible the number is either wrong or not linked to an active WhatsApp account. Double-check the country code and format.
Your Contact Permissions Are Off
WhatsApp requires access to your phone’s contacts. If this permission is disabled, newly saved contacts won’t appear in the app. Check your phone settings and allow contact syncing for WhatsApp.
The Person Blocked You
If you previously chatted with someone and can no longer see their profile photo, status, or last seen time, they may have blocked you. There is no direct notification, but multiple missing profile elements usually indicate a block.
Chat Was Archived or Deleted
If you had a conversation with someone but can no longer find it, check your archived chats. Tap “Archived” at the bottom of the chat list. You can also search by keyword or phone number to try to locate it.
If you’re still unsure who a number belongs to or if the number is hidden, our guide on how to look up anonymous numbers can help you gather enough information to proceed safely.

How to Search People on WhatsApp?Do It Ethically
Searching for someone on WhatsApp is simple when you already have their number, but it is limited otherwise. There’s no global people directory, and WhatsApp keeps user data tightly controlled.
Still, with the proper steps, you can locate the person you’re looking for. Just remember that WhatsApp was built with privacy in mind. As such, users have complete control over who can see their photo, profile name, status, and last seen timestamp.
Avoid using third-party apps that claim to uncover hidden WhatsApp profiles. Most of these violate the platform’s terms of service and can compromise your account security. Stick to verified tools and only reach out to contacts with a legitimate reason.
If you still can’t find them, it may be time to contact them directly through another channel or wait until they reach out.
